NAIDOC Week 2021

NAIDOC Week is held from the first to the second Sunday in July every year. As this always coincides with school holidays I decided that there would be enough schools celebrating this week to warrant providing an overview of a range of games that will allow you to gamify your NAIDOC Week activities.

In case you missed last year’s article I created some Aboriginal and Torres Islander Maths and Movement activities and those can be found here. This year, I wanted to share some traditional games and how these can assist in building fundamental movement skills and an awareness of Australia’s rich history.

Based on the activities offered on the AUS Sport site this article looks at teaching children to play Yulunga or Traditional Indigenous Games from a range of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

The 3 games that are outlined below are all inclusive, can be played by students of all ability levels and backgrounds and build resilience, strength and cooperation. They also develop Fundamental Movement Skills which are the building blocks of all sports, encourage team spirit and can be used to develop an understanding of how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people use games to teach important skills such as hand eye coordination, speed and strength.
