Overview
A CBCA 2021 Notable Book The Fire Wombat is based on Jackie French experience and observations during the 2020 bushfires in southern NSW. As her property is home to dozens of wombats and other native Australian animals she had a first hand view of how fire affects these vulnerable creatures and tells that story in The Fire Wombat.
While this story is suitable for children of all ages it is probably best read to those in infants grades and as such we have created our activities for children in Years 1 or 2. There is a charcoal drawing activity, a matching and creating rhyming words activity, a senses poem, a find-a-word, a simple comprehension on the relief effort of food drops for animals and a graphing / mapping activity to see how much of Australia was devastated by the 2019/20 bushfires - the worst in recorded history.
