Overview
A Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) 2022 notable picture book for older readers this is a story of First Nations Australians presented as a piece of slam poetry. The words and images combine wonderfully together to force the reader to question the way in which Australia has treated its indigenous population and the symbols still used today and how little they represent the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The team at Learn From Play have created five activities for this book for students from Year 3 to Year 8 to allow the images and messages of the book to be discussed in more detail. The activities are designing a new Australian flag, a map of Australia with class origins, comprehension on January 26th, an activity to allow students to meet their neighbours and a debate.
This book works well with other notable books such as Sorry Day by Coral Vass and Day Break by Amy McQuire to teach students about the past and the changes we need to make in Australia's future.
